Celebrating UFOs

There are few good mysteries left in the world and even though most UFOs are explained away as hoaxes or  natural phenomena, a small percentage remain open to speculation.

Today is the 60th anniversary of the Flatwoods Monster. In Flatwoods, Braxton County, West Virginia several local residents reported a UFO sighting and contact with one or more of the ship's occupants. The first seven witnesses claimed to have been attacked with an irritant mist that acted like mustard gas.

Flatwoods is a small hamlet of a few hundred people in the geographical center of the state. It's no longer an isolated place, since 1973 it's been connect to Interstate 79 at exit 67. People there probably still talk about what happened but this isn't one of the more famous or celebrated incidents of UFO history.

The event has been investigated with some of findings still sealed and not available to the public. There is a website www.flatwoodsmonster.com and a book writen by Frank C. Feschino Jr. for more information.

Speaking of celebrated events in UFO history there are UFO festivals in Roswell NM, Kecksburg PA, Exter NH and McMinnville OR with many smaller festivals all across the country. A few of my friends who take UFOs very seriously think of these festivals as something that undermines the real scientific investigation of the subject.

Personally I like the idea of good campy fun while helping the local chamber of commerce. I'm very open to the idea of Earth being visited by extraterrestrials but extraordinary claims need extraordinary proof. So until Klaatu walks down the gang plank of a silver flying saucer I'm willing to relax and watch the parade costumed revelers.
